Budgets and Business
Our bishop, Rev. Robert G. Schaefer, and several other members of the Synod Council gave their annual reports. An election was held to fill council and committee open seats, and voting members approved a 2018 working budget. Synod staff gave reports on:
|• Global Mission
||• Novus Way
||• Mission 100
||• Together In Mission Grants
The discipleship assembly focused on mission workshops and service projects. During a presentation on Friday, Bishop Schaefer expressed in his Friday presentation that "All are equal in the eyes of God. And all means all!" ELCA racial justice program director, Judith Rovers, presented a workshop where participants were encouraged to pair off and discuss racism in their lives and ways to impact change. On Sunday, we received a clear reminder of the need to reshape our culture when we learned of the massacre at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
Worship services, including a sunrise service that was held Saturday morning on the beach, were held each day. Rev. William Flippin, our ELCA church council representative, preached at the Sunday morning service and challenged all members to not remain silent. He encouraged us to be part of the solution to overcome social injustice in our society.
The assembly not only provided members of our Christian church with important information, but we also found it to be an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience. During the event, our interim pastor at the time, Pastor Rick, was acknowledged for being an ordained minister for 35 years.
